Περιγραφή Μαθήματος

This module will examine the development of Greek and Roman sport from the Bronze Age to the demise of pagan athletic festivals in late antiquity.

The lectures will follow a chronological and thematic sequence and emphasis will lie equally on both the development of formal aspects of sport (e.g. techniques and rules of individual events; prizes; historical development of Pan-Hellenic and local games etc.) as well as its social ramifications.

Moreover, the module will provide an introduction to the written and material evidence germane to the reconstruction of the history of sport in the ancient world and will encourage students to use that evidence critically and analytically.
