Aim of the course

The aim of this course is to develop students' knowledge and understanding of the role and conduct of quantitative and qualitative research methods in social sciences and Olympic studies. Intellectual and methodological debates will be discussed to assist students to develop informed opinions and a critical appreciation for other's research. The imperative for ethical research practice will be presented. The course takes a step-by-step approach to the design and implementation of quantitative and qualitative techniques including case study and precedent studies, surveys, interviews, focus groups, participant observation, textual and media analysis. How to manage and analyze data (including computer assisted), and how to write up and present findings are core components of this course.

The course equips students with the skills to review and conduct methodologically sound research as a part of their professional work. Students develop the skills to recognize and reflect on the strengths and limitations of different research methodologies, understand the links between theory and practice, critically assess research, and address ethical and practical issues. Students will be equipped with the knowledge and ability to undertake original research projects and develop a set of transferable workplace skills.

After completing this course, students will be able to:

  • Αcquire knowledge of the basic principles of the scientific method.
  • Understand research terminology
  • Locate information necessary to conduct research, to use computerized databases, and be familiar with social science, web-based, resources.
  • Critically analyze and evaluate published research.
  • Conduct a literature review for identifying scientific sources on their topic of interest.
  • Formulate testable hypotheses/ research questions.
  • Identify the different approaches regarding the selection of participants.
  • Understand in depth the steps to conduct quantitative research study.
  • Describe different ways to construct questionnaires and questionnaire responses.
  • Understand and define reliability and different types of validity.
  • Understand the principles and practice of qualitative research.
  • Learn to collect data using interview and focus groups and become familiar with the techniques of thematic qualitative data analysis.
  • Be aware of the ethical principles of research, ethical challenges, and approval processes.
  • Design their own original research in Social Sciences and Olympic Studies
  • Interact effectively with classmates, contributing ideas, giving feedback, and collaborating with others.
  • Manage self-directed learning using recommended resources.
