This course will examine the application of basic principles of marketing the sport industry. It will entail both comparison and contrast of mainstream marketing practices of sport. Emphasis is on critical analysis of marketing theories as it applies specifically to the sport industry. Topics will include: the unique nature of sport marketing, consumers and their behaviors, promotions, sponsorships with particular attention to Olympic sponsorship. The main objective of the course is to provide students with fundamental knowledge of marketing applicable to sports and Olympic movement. Specific Objectives are to advance student knowledge in the area of marketing, to provide real-life application of marketing theory/concepts into practice, to apply key marketing concepts and strategies within various settings and components of the sport industry and to identify and analyze problems/opportunities within the sport industry; develop marketing solutions addressing such problems/solutions.
By the end of the course the students are expected to develop the following skills or learning outcomes:
- Understand the historical overview of Olympic marketing
- Describe the various Olympic marketing programs
- Discuss the specificities of Olympic Marketing
- Identity the key elements of branding and the Olympic brand
- Identify unique characteristics of sponsorship marketing
- Describe the importance of sponsorship marketing.
- Explain the relationship between sponsorship marketing and marketing in general.
- Describe the overall process of attracting sponsorships.
